Don’t panic. Keep a clear head to make logical and sensible decisions.
Staying calm can be difficult in the moment, but, in the long run those hasty decisions can negatively impact your insurance claim.
In the case of major property damage such as fire, gas leak, hurricane, wind damage, tornado etc., your first step is to ensure everyone is off the property immediately and emergency services are called.
With minor issues such as water damage or sewer back-ups, shut off the main water supply and don’t attempt to clean up the water/sewage damage by yourself. Contact a reliable water/sewage mitigation company from your area to deal with the clean-up.
Do NOT throw out any damaged items such as carpet, furniture, electronics, etc. Your insurance adjuster will not pay for these items unless they can document them. Store them outside, in a shed, under a tarp, etc.
Take photos of the property damage and all contents or personal belongings.
For business owners with business coverage, keep all financials, payroll statements, business interruption coverages, etc. in a secure location (i.e. with your accountant or lawyer).
Most people who experience their first insurance damage claim believe their insurance company will help them receive a fair settlement for their loss. Truthfully, insurance companies are not in the business of paying out money. How would you like the IRS telling you what they believe you should receive for a refund on your taxes? The insurance industry will only tell you what they are willing to pay for your loss or deny your claim entirely. Receiving a fair settlement from insurance companies is a battle that few ever win alone.
With over 27 years of experience as public adjusters, Advantage Public Adjusters is here to help you fight for the settlement you deserve.
